This map shows all the star systems that lie within 12.5 light years of our Sun. Most of the stars are red dwarfs - stars with a tenth of the Sun's mass and less than one hundredth the luminosity. Roughly eighty percent of all the stars in the universe are red dwarfs, and the nearest star - Proxima - is a typical example.

This year will be longer than usual -- by one second, the U.S. Institute of Standards and Technology said last Wednesday.

The earth is sufficiently out of sync that a leap second has been scheduled for 7 p.m. U.S. Eastern Standard Time on Dec. 31, said the institute.

A total of 24 leap seconds have been added since 1972, the last being in December 2005, because the earth is slowing and does not rotate exactly once every 24 hours, the Institute said.

The discrepancy went unnoticed ...

A star is a big ball in outer space that is made of very hot plasma.

Stars get energy using nuclear fusion so they can make light, making

them look like they are on fire. Most stars look like shiny dots from

Earth, because they are far away, and Earth's atmosphere makes it

harder to see them well.

Data from the joint ESA/NASA Ulysses mission show that the Sun has reduced its output of solar wind to the lowest levels since accurate readings have become available. This current state of the Sun could reduce the natural shielding that envelops our Solar System.

In the course of its more than 17 years of operations the Ulysses spacecraft has completed 3 polar orbits of the Sun, spanning more than one complete solar cycle. The resulting data set is a unique resource enabling researchers ...

Cosmic Rays

A fundamental question that has been answered by Ulysses relates to the presence of large-scale directional fluctuations in the polar heliospheric magnetic field. Prior to the launch of Ulysses, it was suggested that the classical picture of smooth, near-radial polar magnetic field lines would be modified by the effects of random walk of the field foot points resulting from super-granulation motion in the photosphere. This stochastic ...
